 President-elect Donald Trump is rolling out his picks for who he plans to nominate to fill his Cabinet, the members of which will help implement his priorities soon after the inauguration. 

Secretary of State-Marco Rubio

• Rubio, who has served in the Senate since 2011, may bring some more traditional GOP views into Trump’s foreign policy orbit as secretary of State. Trump and Rubio were rivals in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, but the Florida Republican has turned into a Trump ally. Rubio holds hard-line views on many foreign policy issues when it comes to Iran and Cuba but has championed maintaining international alliances that Trump remains skeptical of, such as NATO. But Rubio will likely sail through a GOP-controlled chamber and pick up a few Democratic votes along the way. 

Secretary of Defense-Pete Hegseth

•  Hegseth, a Fox News host for the past eight years and an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is a relative outsider with no Pentagon or government experience outside of his military service. Though a surprise pick, Hegseth was an early backer of Trump when he ran for president in 2016 — back when many prominent Republicans were highly critical of the New York billionaire. Hegseth was considered for a position in Trump’s first administration, but he was ultimately passed over. 

Secretary of Homeland Security

•  Noem is a fierce Trump supporter and one-time VP contender. She sent South Dakota National Guard troops to the southwest border at least five times as governor. If confirmed by the GOP-led Senate, she will have a broad mandate to enact the sweeping crackdown he promised on the campaign trail, including mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, the hiring of more border agents and construction of more detention facilities. 

Environmental Protection Agency

•  Zeldin, a former representative from New York, is most recently remembered for his surprisingly strong showing in the race for New York governor against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2022 — during which he issued a plan calling on the state to lift its ban on fracking for natural gas. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Zeldin served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Financial Services Committee during his seven terms in Congress, during which he was one of two Jewish Republicans to serve. He lost his reelection in 2022. 

Ambassador to the UN

•  A staunch defender of Israel and a fierce critic of the United Nations, Stefanik is a vocal Trump ally who has represented New York in Congress since 2015. The former aide to George W. Bush gained national prominence from her fiery defenses of the president-elect during Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019 and for grilling university presidents over protests over Gaza last spring. Her nomination is expected to face little resistance from Republicans in the Senate due to her position as chair of the House Republican Conference and her extensive relationships across Congress.

Director of the Central Intelligence Agency 

•  Ratcliffe, an attorney and former four-term Republican lawmaker from Texas, served as Trump’s director of national intelligence from 2020 to 2021, where he burnished his reputation as a close ally of the president and a deep skeptic of the nation's intelligence agencies. Ratcliffe was narrowly confirmed by the Senate to the DNI role four years ago, but may have an easier time in the GOP-controlled Senate next year. 

White House Chief of Staff

•  A skilled operator who got her start in Republican politics as a scheduler for the Reagan White House, Wiles ran Trump’s successful Florida operations in the 2016 and 2020 campaigns. In early 2021, Wiles signed on as the CEO of Trump’s Save America PAC, effectively running his operation at Mar-a-Lago after he lost the election. Wiles has earned the trust of Trump, who appreciates that she was willing to help him after he left the White House, and is widely respected by campaign staff and members of Congress. 

Former and future President Donald Trump met with Republicans in Congress and visited his old office today, the Oval Office, making his first trip to Washington since winning the presidential election.
